Guanyin Oracle Lot 87: Cheng Yaojin explores the cave
The Verse
Halfway up the mountain, the sun sinks behind the ridge;
Steep cliffs and rocky heights are not yet safe to climb.
Look upward for Heaven’s protection and care—
Your footing still hangs in the vast expanse.

The Story Behind the Lot
Cheng Yaojin explores the cave
Cheng Yaojin was a formidable warrior at the turn of the Sui and Tang dynasties. Good-natured, impulsive, and forthright, he is a familiar figure in popular historical tales. Legend says that Cheng Yaojin once climbed a mountain and entered a cave in search of treasure or a route through. Halfway up, the path became steep and difficult, full of rugged hazards. He was caught between advancing and retreating, and needed quick thinking and outside help to get through. This lot takes its meaning from the image of exploring a cave and reaching halfway up the mountain. It suggests that you are partway through a venture: you have made some progress but have not yet reached your goal, and the road ahead is dangerous and full of obstacles. Do not press on alone or force an outcome. Assess the situation carefully and seek outside help from a benefactor to overcome the difficulties. Keep to a steady course for safety; rash action brings danger. Wait until the timing and support are right.
The Story Behind the Lot (alternate version)Another traditional version, for reference
Cao Cao on the Narrow, Winding Road
Cao Cao was a formidable warlord of the Three Kingdoms period, renowned for his strategic skill, though he too sometimes found himself in danger. Legend tells that his army once strayed onto a narrow, winding track. Twisting and uneven, it was as difficult to traverse as a sheep’s intestine; steep slopes rose on either side, and the troops crowded together, unable to advance or retreat as danger closed in. Only the help of favorable circumstances and the protection of his soldiers allowed him to escape. Cao Cao’s “Bitter Cold Journey” includes the lines: “Northward over Mount Taihang—how steep and daunting! The Sheep’s Intestine Slope twists and turns, its bends breaking the wheels.” They capture the hardship of the road. This lot takes its meaning from the image of a perilous, winding path. It suggests that you are in danger, with difficult ground ahead and problems making it hard to know whether to advance or retreat. Do not try to force your way forward. Proceed carefully and slowly, relying on outside help from a benefactor to make it safely through.
