The Story Behind the Lot
Liang Hao passes the imperial exam
Liang Hao was a man of the Northern Song. According to legend, he studied hard from childhood but repeatedly failed the examinations, spending much of his life frustrated in his pursuit of official honors. Yet he never wavered or stopped learning. After decades of study, he finally passed the highest examination in old age and placed first, a story that became famous as an example of late-blooming talent and perseverance in one’s later years. Later legend claimed that he passed at the age of eighty-two. This is an exaggeration added by folk tradition, but the central story of his success in later life through persistence remains. Liang Hao devoted most of his life to study and finally achieved fame and success in old age, adding glory to his later years. This story means that success and recognition may come sooner or later; if you persevere and hold to your purpose, blessings may come even after hardship in the first half of life. This lot advises against rushing: those who persevere in their efforts will eventually see the clouds part and find that all falls into place. It is a highly auspicious sign.
The Story Behind the Lot (alternate version)Another traditional version, for reference
Gao Shi Finds Fame at Fifty
Gao Shi was a celebrated frontier poet of the High Tang, famed alongside Cen Shen for his vigorous, stirring verse. His early life was difficult, and his talents went unrecognized for a long time. He wandered from place to place and did not begin to rise to prominence until around the age of fifty, when his genuine ability opened a path into official service. He later became a regional military governor and was enfeoffed as the Marquis of Bohai County. Among Tang poets, his official career was exceptionally distinguished: he was a late bloomer who enjoyed both honor and prosperity. Gao Shi spent the first half of his life in low-ranking positions and wasted years, yet never abandoned his lofty ambitions. In middle and later life he finally became famous, attaining high office and generous rewards. This story means that fame may come late, but with a solid foundation and persistence, one can still make a stunning mark in later years and enjoy good fortune. This lot signifies that although you may not have found success yet, abundant blessings lie ahead; recognition and prosperity will eventually arrive together. Like Liang Hao passing the highest examination, it is a highly auspicious sign of late success and an honored later life.
