Guanyin Oracle Lot 10: Pang Juan surveys the formation
The Verse
A priceless jewel lies safely in your chest,
Yet you search for it in distant lands.
Like carrying a lamp to look for fire,
Better rest quietly and spare your heart the strain.

AI readingA precious treasure is already in your own chest, yet you travel far from home searching for it. Like looking for fire while holding a lit lamp, this wastes your energy. What you seek, including opportunities, is close at hand. There is no need to roam elsewhere; remain calm and attend to your own affairs, and rewards will come.
The Story Behind the Lot

Pang Juan surveys the formation
Pang Juan was a celebrated general of the state of Wei during the Warring States period. In his youth, he studied military strategy under Guiguzi alongside Sun Bin. He knew that his abilities fell short of Sun Bin's, yet he was eager to distinguish himself. After entering Wei's service and becoming a senior general, he grew fearful of Sun Bin's talent. He devised a scheme to lure Sun Bin to Wei, where he subjected him to the punishment of mutilating the knees, severed both his feet, and tattooed his face, intending to prevent him from ever rising to prominence. Sun Bin endured the humiliation and suffering, and was later secretly rescued by an envoy from Qi. He then helped King Wei of Qi train troops and arrange battle formations. In the battles of Guiling and Maling, Sun Bin met a weary enemy with rested forces and used a decreasing number of cooking fires to lure the enemy onward. Pang Juan fell into the trap and was defeated on the road to Maling. Seeing that defeat was certain, he cut his own throat in anger, lamenting before he died, 'So I have made that wretch famous.' Although Pang Juan possessed exceptional military talent, he failed to value his own strengths and single-mindedly pursued fame and achievement elsewhere. His jealousy also led him to persecute a fellow student. By neglecting what mattered and chasing lesser aims, he ultimately brought disaster upon himself. This story warns that those who fail to cherish their strengths, recklessly chase glory, and act with malicious intentions will eventually invite calamity and ruin, however talented they may be. As a sign of moderate fortune, it cautions against neglecting the essential for the superficial and bringing misfortune upon oneself.
The Story Behind the Lot (alternate version)Another traditional version, for reference

King Zhaoxiang of Qin Offers Cities for Zhao's Jade
During the Warring States period, King Huiwen of Zhao acquired the jade disk known as the He Shi Bi. Hearing of it, King Zhaoxiang of Qin coveted the treasure and sent an envoy with a letter offering fifteen cities in exchange. The king of Zhao ordered Lin Xiangru to take the jade to Qin as his envoy. The king of Qin admired it at length and was delighted, but never mentioned surrendering the cities. Lin Xiangru pretended that the jade had a flaw, retrieved it, and stepped back beside a pillar. With a stern expression, he declared, 'Your Majesty promised fifteen cities but has shown no sincerity. I am prepared to smash both my head and the jade against this pillar.' Fearing that he would really destroy the treasure, the king made vague promises. Judging that the king had no intention of handing over the cities, Lin Xiangru secretly sent someone back to Zhao with the jade concealed on his person. Though angry, the king of Qin could do nothing and had to send Lin Xiangru home with the honors due a distinguished guest. The cities were never surrendered, and the jade was never given to Qin again. The oracle draws this lesson from the story: a priceless treasure already rests in your own chest, so why travel far from home to search for it? It is as needless as carrying a lit lamp in search of fire. Although the treasure was ultimately preserved, the journey still cost time and effort, hence the indication of moderate fortune. Remain content and tranquil; chasing things elsewhere only burdens the mind.
