The Story Behind the Lot
Liu Bei is taken as a bridegroom
The story of Liu Bei seeking a bride comes from the *Romance of the Three Kingdoms*. Sun Quan and Zhou Yu devised a beauty trap, falsely claiming that Sun Shangxiang, Sun Quan’s younger sister, would marry Liu Bei, luring him across the Yangtze into Wu so they could seize Jingzhou. Zhuge Liang saw through their scheme and gave Zhao Yun three ingenious plans sealed in brocade pouches. Liu Bei followed them and not only married successfully but also won the favor of Lady Wu. He eventually returned safely to Jingzhou with his wife, leaving Zhou Yu to lose both his wife and his soldiers. In his early years, Liu Bei had endured hardship and disappointment. This marriage proposal not only turned danger into safety but also brought a marriage and a new turn of fortune. This lot signifies that even after hardship, a person who uses wisdom well can turn danger to good fortune and move from adversity to prosperity through fortuitous circumstances. It is an auspicious sign of a change in fortune.
The Story Behind the Lot (alternate version)Another traditional version, for reference
Wang Meng Catches Lice
Wang Meng was a prominent minister of Former Qin during the Sixteen Kingdoms period. Born into poverty, he made his living selling bamboo winnowing baskets in his early years, yet he had great ambitions and was learned and resourceful. Huan Wen, a general of Eastern Jin, marched north into the Guanzhong region. Wang Meng went to meet him in coarse clothes, discussing the state of the realm while casually picking lice from his lapel as though no one else were there. His composure and extraordinary bearing astonished Huan Wen. Wang Meng later met Fu Jian, and the two ruler and minister worked in harmony. Wang Meng helped Former Qin grow wealthy and strong and unite northern China, rising to the highest rank of office. His lice-catching conversation captures the image of a hero who remained true to himself despite humble circumstances. This lot signifies that even in low circumstances, one whose talent and virtue shine through and who wins the recognition of a wise ruler can ultimately soar to great heights. It is a most auspicious sign.
