The Story Behind the Lot
Dong Zhong seeks his family
Dong Zhong’s search for his family is a filial tale passed down among the people. Its origins are often linked to the Han-dynasty story of Dong Yong, who sold himself into servitude to bury his father. It tells of Dong Zhong (said by some to be Dong Yong’s son), who endured hardship, rumors, and many trials as he searched far and wide until at last he found his missing relatives and the family was reunited. At its heart, the story shows how sincere filial devotion can overcome barriers and malicious gossip, bringing relief after hardship. Rumors and idle talk may swirl all around, but only by keeping faith with one’s true intentions and persevering can loved ones be reunited. If this oracle is drawn, it suggests that although the seeker may face hardship and rumors for a time, sincerity and patience will eventually lead to what they seek and to a family reunion. This is a favorable sign within the upper-middle rank.
The Story Behind the Lot (alternate version)Another traditional version, for reference
Ning Qi Tends Cattle
Ning Qi lived during the Spring and Autumn period. Poor and unrecognized, he earned his living tending cattle for others. One night, Duke Huan of Qi was traveling by carriage when Ning Qi, working beneath it as he tended the oxen, struck an ox’s horn and sang aloud of his frustration at having talent without opportunity. Duke Huan heard the unusual song and recognized Ning Qi’s ability. He appointed him to high office despite his humble origins, and Ning Qi eventually became a minister of Qi, helping Duke Huan establish his hegemony. Though in a lowly position, Ning Qi never abandoned his lofty ambitions or let idle talk sway him. He waited quietly to be recognized by a worthy ruler and eventually attained wealth and distinction. If this oracle is drawn, it suggests that even if the seeker is temporarily at the bottom, they need not heed outside gossip. By staying true to their responsibilities and waiting for the right moment, they will have a chance to rise. This is a sign of hardship followed by success.
