The Story Behind the Lot
Ye Mengxiong attends the imperial court
Ye Mengxiong was a native of Guishan in Guangdong during the Ming dynasty. He earned the jinshi degree in the Jiajing era and became an upright official who spoke fearlessly. Early in his career, his frank remonstrances offended powerful figures and aroused suspicion at court. For a time, he was marginalized and assigned to posts away from the capital, leaving his ambitions frustrated and his official career under a cloud. Yet he remained honest and upright and possessed exceptional ability. Eventually, the court employed him again, and he rose through successive offices to become Minister of War and Junior Guardian of the Crown Prince. During his service, he oversaw military affairs in the Three Border Commands and suppressed rebellion in the northwest, earning outstanding military honors and widespread renown. He was like a fine piece of jade finally discovered in the mud, its brilliance restored once the grime was brushed away. Drawing on Ye Mengxiong's early experience of suspicion and neglect, followed by vindication and appointment to important responsibilities when the time was right, this lot suggests that even those temporarily wronged, overlooked, or neglected will eventually see the clouds disperse, misunderstandings dissolve, and appreciation return, provided they retain both virtue and ability and steadfastly await their opportunity.
The Story Behind the Lot (alternate version)Another traditional version, for reference
Hai Rui
Hai Rui, a native of Qiongzhou, was a renowned incorruptible official of the Ming dynasty, remembered for his uncompromising integrity. He served during the Jiajing, Longqing, and Wanli reigns, administering the law impartially throughout his life and refusing to bow to the powerful. While serving as a bureau secretary in the Ministry of Revenue during the Jiajing era, he saw Emperor Shizong's superstitious devotion to Daoist rites and neglect of government. He prepared his own coffin before submitting the Memorial on Peace and Order, risking his life to speak frankly and expose the failings of the time. His words enraged the emperor, and he was imprisoned and sentenced to death, enduring distress and grave danger. After Shizong's death, he was released and restored to office, and the injustice against him was redressed. Hai Rui remained uncorrupted throughout his life and lived frugally in office. When he died, his family had no surplus wealth, yet his efforts to curb powerful bullies and overturn wrongful convictions won him the deep affection of the people. He was like fine jade drawn from the mud, its true quality shining more clearly once the dust was washed away. Drawing on Hai Rui's unjust suffering and eventual vindication and return to service, this lot suggests that even an innocent person facing suspicion and hardship can ultimately emerge into the sunlight and shine again by remaining upright and patiently awaiting the right moment.
