The Story Behind the Lot
Liu Chen meets immortal maidens
This legend comes from Records of the Hidden and the Visible and tells of Liu Chen and Ruan Zhao, who entered Mount Tiantai during the Eastern Han dynasty to gather medicinal herbs. The two lost their way in the mountains, exhausted their provisions, and grew weak. Desperately searching for a way out and a source of water, they followed a stream and suddenly discovered a grove of peach trees in a valley. They ate the peaches to relieve their hunger. Then they noticed vegetable leaves and sesame rice floating downstream. Following these traces, they came upon two beautiful female immortals, who greeted them as though they had known them for years and warmly urged them to stay. The two men spent half a year enjoying the peace and blessings of the immortal realm. When homesickness finally brought them back, they discovered that several generations had passed in the human world, and even their descendants no longer recognized them. The story suggests that unexpected encounters and providential help may arrive when people are lost in hardship and struggling to find a way forward, releasing them from their immediate difficulties. Yet encounters with immortals are elusive, and joy at its height may give way to change; what is gained must therefore be cherished. This is an omen of moderate fortune, in which happiness carries an element of uncertainty and blessing and misfortune remain intertwined.

King Zhao of Yan Builds the Golden Terrace
During the Warring States period, a major invasion by Qi devastated the state of Yan. After ascending the throne, King Zhao of Yan resolved to avenge this humiliation and restore his state. He consulted the worthy scholar Guo Wei about how to attract talented people. Guo Wei used the parable of paying a thousand pieces of gold for the bones of a fine horse, advising the king to demonstrate his sincerity by first treating those already around him generously. The king accordingly built a high terrace for Guo Wei and placed gold upon it to attract worthy people from throughout the realm. This became known as the Golden Terrace, also called the Terrace for Recruiting the Worthy. As word spread, scholars and men of ability flocked to Yan. Distinguished ministers and generals, including Yue Yi, Zou Yan, and Ju Xin, arrived in succession. United in purpose, the king and his ministers worked tirelessly to govern well. Eventually, Yue Yi led an allied army of five states to a decisive victory over Qi, capturing more than seventy cities and avenging Yan's earlier humiliation. The story signifies that an eager search for talent, coupled with humility and respect toward the worthy, will ultimately be rewarded. Sincere efforts to seek capable people and painstaking work can attract talent and accomplish great undertakings. It is an omen of renewal, with success following initial difficulty.
