The Story Behind the Lot
The Star Immortal tests young Dou
Dou'er was Dou Yanshan, whose given name was Dou Yujun, a man of the Five Dynasties period. In his youth, he was narrow-minded and harsh, often acting unfairly. For a time, he had no sons and suffered repeated misfortune. According to legend, the Star of Supreme White (Venus) appeared as an old man to enlighten him and secretly test his true character. The old man warned that unless Dou reformed and did good, he would remain without descendants and blessings. Dou Yanshan came to his senses and deeply repented of his past. From then on, he acted fairly and uprightly, delighted in helping others, harbored no favoritism, and accumulated merit through good deeds performed without seeking recognition. Heaven was moved by his sincerity and good conduct, and blessings and prosperity endured for his family. All five of his sons passed the imperial examinations, an achievement celebrated as “Five Sons Win Honors.” The story teaches that abandoning evil for good and remaining impartial can attract blessings. This is a most auspicious sign: if you keep a principled heart, set aside favoritism, and do good, the gods will protect you and benefactors will look after you. Misfortune can turn to good fortune, and matters will go smoothly.
The Story Behind the Lot (alternate version)Another traditional version, for reference
Guan Zhong Serves as Chancellor of Qi
Guan Zhong was a worthy chancellor of the Spring and Autumn period. Recommended early in his career by Bao Shuya, he served Duke Huan of Qi. He governed and handled affairs fairly and impartially, with clear rewards and punishments and strict laws. He treated people without favoritism, appointing the worthy rather than those with personal connections. With his sense of justice and skill in statecraft, he helped Duke Huan reform domestic affairs, enrich the state and strengthen its armies, and uphold the Zhou king while resisting foreign powers. He brought the feudal lords together nine times and restored order to the realm, establishing Qi’s hegemony in the Spring and Autumn period. He himself became renowned through the ages as a model chancellor. The story teaches that a fair and upright heart, guided by justice, can achieve great things and earn respect. This is a most auspicious sign: if you act fairly and uprightly without favoritism, Heaven will look kindly on you and benefactors will help. Right and wrong will be judged fairly, and matters will go smoothly, bringing success and recognition.
