The Story Behind the Lot
Grand viewing of jade blossoms
The jade blossom is a legendary celestial flower, crystalline as jade and extraordinarily fragrant, unlike any earthly bloom. It symbolizes something rare and beautiful: an auspicious treasure that can be hoped for and attained. “Viewing the jade blossoms” means seeing and admiring the wondrous flowers of the immortal realm. It suggests that what one encounters is precious, beautiful, and delightful—like a hidden gem finally revealed in all its brilliance. This lot draws on that image to show someone with talent and fine qualities within, like an uncut gem concealed from view. When the right opportunity comes and someone recognizes their worth, they will bloom like a jade blossom and shine brilliantly. Know that true quality cannot remain hidden forever, and talent will surely find its purpose. If, while pursuing your plans, you meet someone with discernment who recognizes your worth and a benefactor who supports you, your future will be bright and all will go smoothly. This is an auspicious and beautiful sign.
The Story Behind the Lot (alternate version)Another traditional version, for reference
Taigong Meets King Wen
Taigong was Jiang Ziya, also known as Shang. He possessed the talent to govern the realm, yet remained obscure among ordinary people past the age of seventy, living in poverty. He withdrew to the banks of the Wei River and fished with a straight hook held three feet above the water. When asked why, he replied, “Those who are willing will take the bait”—for in truth, he was quietly waiting for a worthy ruler. King Wen of Zhou, Ji Chang, sought to strengthen Zhou and overthrow Shang, and was searching widely for able men. Before a hunt, he received an oracle: “What you catch will be neither dragon nor tiger, but the helper of a king.” Just as foretold, he met Jiang Ziya fishing beside the Wei River. After a long conversation, King Wen was delighted and declared him the worthy man his ancestors had hoped for. He honored him with the name “Taigong Wang,” brought him back in his carriage, and appointed him chief adviser. Jiang Ziya then assisted Kings Wen and Wu, ultimately helping Zhou overthrow Shang and establish its lasting greatness. This lot draws on the story to signify a gifted person who has remained hidden but will at last meet a discerning patron who guides and supports them, like a gem emerging from stone and winning recognition at a stroke. With the recognition of a wise person and the help of a benefactor, plans will prosper and great ambitions can be realized.
