Guanyin Oracle Lot 61: Su Xiaomei stumps her husband
The Verse
By day I recite; by moonlight, sing,
At every gathering, laugh and play.
When kindred souls meet, nothing stays concealed;
Cheers ring out as two hearts join as one.

The Story Behind the Lot
Su Xiaomei stumps her husband
Su Xiaomei is said in folk legend to have been Su Dongpo’s younger sister, quick-witted and outstanding in poetry and prose. According to the tale, she married the gifted poet Qin Shaoyou. On their wedding night, she refused to let the groom into the bridal chamber straightaway. Instead, she challenged him with lines of poetry, requiring him to answer her verses and prove his literary talent before she would open the door. Qin Shaoyou was a celebrated poet of his day. Though several attempts left him stumped, he finally composed an apt reply with a discreet hint from Su Dongpo. The couple came to know one another through poetry and proved a match in talent, giving rise to a beloved tale. The story tells of two kindred spirits testing one another’s true ability, meeting with openness and holding nothing back, until they achieve harmony together. In this oracle, it suggests meeting someone who shares your interests and aspirations. Be sincere and candid, and matters will fall into place; mutual affection and smooth progress are likely. It is an auspicious sign of joy emerging from difficulty.
The Story Behind the Lot (alternate version)Another traditional version, for reference
The Camp Servant Returns to Zhao
The camp servant was a low-ranking soldier assigned to tend the fire and cook for the army, as told in the Records of the Grand Historian. Amid the chaos at the end of the Qin dynasty, Wu Chen declared himself King of Zhao, only to be captured by the Yan army. The people of Yan hoped to use him as leverage to seize Zhao territory. Zhao sent envoys to negotiate, but the Yan general killed several in succession, and no one knew what to do. Then an inconspicuous camp servant stepped forward and went alone into the Yan camp to reason with the general: if Yan killed the king, Zhao would appoint a new one and join the other states to attack Yan. It would be better to treat the king with respect and send him home, which might win Zhao as an ally. Moved by the servant’s frank and honest analysis, the general did indeed escort the king back to Zhao. The story shows how an obscure person, through fortuitous timing and candid sincerity, can resolve a crisis. In this oracle, it means that even someone of humble status can turn hardship into good fortune and see matters go smoothly when the right opportunity arises and people deal with one another sincerely and openly.
