The Story Behind the Lot
Dou Yanshan accumulates good deeds
Dou Yanshan’s accumulation of good deeds is an allusion from the Five Dynasties and the early Song. The Three Character Classic celebrates him in the lines, “Dou Yanshan followed the right way; he taught his five sons, and all made their names.” Dou Yanshan was the courtesy name of Dou Yujun, a native of Yanshan, near present-day Beijing. In his early years, he often acted wrongly and had poor judgment, and for a time he was thought to have little good fortune and few prospects for descendants. After a timely awakening, he deeply regretted his past conduct and changed his ways. From then on, for decades without interruption, he did good deeds: helping the poor and those in danger, building bridges and roads, assisting families with weddings and funerals, and supporting education and talent. Heaven granted the good man’s wish. Not only did his life grow longer and his blessings increase, but all five of his sons—Dou Yi, Dou Yan, Dou Kan, Dou Cheng, and Dou Xi—passed the civil service examinations in succession. They were known as the “Five Dragons of the Dou family,” and the whole family became renowned and prosperous, like a magnificent pagoda shining with light as a thousand auspicious signs gathered around it. This allusion makes the lot supremely auspicious: if you turn away from past wrongs and continue to accumulate good deeds, divine protection and the support of worthy people will come to you. Your blessings will endure, your descendants will prosper, and misfortune will turn to good fortune in all things.
The Story Behind the Lot (alternate version)Another traditional version, for reference
The Prince of Fenyang and the Weaver Maiden on Qixi
According to legend, early in his military career, Guo Ziyi was serving on the frontier. Once, he traveled to the capital to hurry the delivery of military funds. On his return, when he reached Yinzhou, it was the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. Blinding sandstorms darkened the sky and made travel impossible, so he had to spend the night on the floor of an empty roadside house. Just as he was about to sleep, a bright red glow appeared on either side. He rose in alarm and looked up to see a cloud chariot slowly descending from the sky. A woman sat upright inside, dignified and radiant, clearly no ordinary person. Guo Ziyi bowed at once and prayed: “Today is Qixi; you must be the Weaver Maiden come down from heaven. Please grant me long life and wealth.” The woman smiled gently and replied, “Great wealth, and a long life too.” Then the rosy light returned and the cloud chariot slowly rose. The woman continued to smile down at him until the mist thickened and she could no longer be seen. As it happened, her words came true: Guo Ziyi wielded power throughout the realm without arousing suspicion at court, and his unmatched service never made the emperor distrust him. Blessed with both good fortune and virtue, he remained honored and prosperous to the end. This supremely auspicious lot is like a pagoda shining in every direction, protected by heavenly dragons. Offer sincere and devout reverence, and a thousand blessings will descend.
