The Story Behind the Lot
Zhongli attains immortality
Zhongli Quan, one of the Eight Immortals in Daoist tradition, is said to have been a military commander in the Han dynasty and is therefore also known as Han Zhongli. He led troops to the frontier, but an overconfident advance ended in defeat. His army scattered, and he fled alone into the mountains. At his lowest point, he met the immortal Donghua Dijun, identified in some accounts as Wang Xuanfu, who taught him the path to long life and the art of the golden elixir. Zhongli let go of worldly rank and military success, devoted himself to cultivation, and eventually attained the Way. He later guided Lü Dongbin and became a revered teacher. His transformation from defeated general to immortal suggests that a crisis can open the way to a new beginning. After an old course falls apart, fresh opportunities may appear: an exceptionally auspicious sign of recovery after hardship.

Emperor Taizu of Song Is Draped in the Yellow Robe
Zhao Kuangyin commanded the palace troops of the Later Zhou dynasty. When Emperor Shizong died young, a child succeeded him, leaving the court vulnerable. In 960, reports arrived that Khitan and Northern Han forces were invading from the north, and Zhao was ordered to lead an army to meet them. At Chenqiao Station, his soldiers placed a yellow imperial robe on his shoulders during the night and acclaimed him emperor. Zhao accepted their support, returned to Kaifeng, and took the throne with little bloodshed, founding the Song dynasty and bringing the turmoil of the Five Dynasties toward an end. Known as the Chenqiao Mutiny, the episode symbolizes an opening of fortune, support from influential people, and events falling into place. It points to a particularly favorable turn.
