The Story Behind the Lot
Gourd Valley set ablaze
During the Three Kingdoms period, Zhuge Liang made six campaigns against Mount Qi, where he was locked in a stalemate with Sima Yi. Kongming devised a plan to lure Sima Yi and his sons into Shangfang Valley, also known as Hulu Valley. The narrow entrance gave the valley the shape of a gourd. Shu forces had laid in ambush with dry firewood and land mines; when the Wei army had entered deep into the valley, they set it ablaze. Flames surged toward the sky, trapping Sima Yi and his sons in what seemed certain to be a fatal inferno. Unexpectedly, a sudden rainstorm put out the entire fire. Sima Yi seized the chance to break out and survive against all odds. Seeing this, Zhuge Liang sighed, “People can make plans, but Heaven decides whether they succeed.” Drawing on this tale, the oracle suggests that even when someone is caught in a great calamity, with danger closing in on every side and no way out in sight, a glimmer of hope and protection may remain; Heaven may spare their life. Though you are in danger, do not despair: your foundations remain intact, and you will ultimately escape and turn peril into safety.

Lü Dongbin’s Rebirth
Lü Dongbin is one of the Eight Immortals of Daoism. Legend says that he was once a scholar in the Tang dynasty who repeatedly failed the examinations. At a wine shop in Chang’an, he met Zhongli Quan, who taught him the art of “the Yellow Millet Dream.” In the dream, Lü Dongbin lived through fifty years of glory, followed by the ruin of his family. When he awoke, the millet was not yet cooked, and he understood that life’s rises and falls, gains and losses, were all like a dream. Zhongli Quan then tested Lü Dongbin’s resolve ten times. Lü endured trials and temptations without betraying his true nature, and eventually attained the Dao and became an immortal, transformed and born anew. The oracle draws on this idea of rebirth: after hardship and repeated trials, those who hold fast to their true nature and keep their foundations firm can find new beginnings once adversity has passed, like a withered tree in spring. Take hardship as a refining trial; remain upright and wait for the right moment, and you can rally and build lasting stability.
