The Story Behind the Lot
Cheng Yaojin recruits Xue Rengui
Xue Rengui was born into a poor family. In his early years, his family fell into decline, and he had no way to join the army. Though he possessed extraordinary martial skill, he remained at the bottom of the ranks for a long time, unable to show his abilities. According to legend, the veteran general Cheng Yaojin recognized his talent and strongly recommended him, allowing Xue Rengui to distinguish himself. He later joined Emperor Taizong of Tang on the campaign in Liaodong, riding alone in white and surpassing all others in bravery. After many remarkable feats, he became a celebrated general whose name commanded respect along the frontier. Gold buried in gravel will eventually be found by someone who knows its worth. This story in the oracle signifies a talented person meeting a discerning patron and a turn in fortune. Even if you are now in hardship and unrecognized, do not give up on yourself. As long as you have ability and wait sincerely for the right moment, a benefactor will come to guide and support you. Hone your skills and prepare for the opportunity; your day to shine is close at hand.
The Story Behind the Lot (alternate version)Another traditional version, for reference
Bao Shuya Recommends Guan Zhong
Guan Zhong and Bao Shuya were close friends in the state of Qi during the Spring and Autumn period. In their early years, they went into business together. Guan Zhong took a larger share of the profits, but Bao Shuya did not consider him greedy. Later, they served rival lords: Guan Zhong supported Prince Jiu, while Bao Shuya supported Prince Xiaobai. Xiaobai ascended the throne as Duke Huan of Qi, while Guan Zhong, a member of the opposing faction, was imprisoned and faced death. Knowing Guan Zhong's talent, Bao Shuya urged the duke to pardon him and appoint him chancellor, and was content to serve beneath him. The duke took his advice, and Guan Zhong went on to help Qi bring the other lords into alliance nine times and restore order to the realm, establishing its hegemony. This story in the oracle signifies receiving a benefactor's protection in adversity and ultimately being entrusted with important work. Though you may now feel trapped in a cage, genuine talent and sincere support can dispel danger and open the way to a hopeful future. You need not search far for a precious gem; someone nearby already recognizes and protects your gifts.
