Guanyin Oracle Lot 32: Liu Bei seeks worthy men
The Verse
The road ahead is shrouded; what lies in store is hard to tell.
Who knows the jade concealed within the stone?
One day, when a worthy hand cuts it open, the rare green jade within will at last be seen.

The Story Behind the Lot
Liu Bei seeks worthy men
Liu Bei, a kinsman of the Han imperial house, aspired to restore order to the realm, yet spent years wandering and relying on others, without a wise adviser to assist him. After Xu Shu recommended him, Liu Bei learned of Zhuge Liang, the “Sleeping Dragon” of Longzhong. He visited Zhuge Liang’s thatched cottage three times, traveling there himself through wind and snow, and eventually moved Kongming to come forth through his sincerity. Together they achieved the division of the realm into three kingdoms. At the outset of his search for worthy talent, the way ahead was uncertain; the person he needed was close by, yet he did not know it. Only by treating people sincerely and searching patiently could he find a wise ruler and worthy ministers. This story in the lot suggests that an opportunity is still taking shape. Though you may feel lost and helpless now, lower your pride and seek sincerely, and a benefactor will eventually appear. Do not make hasty judgments. Build good relationships and wait for the right moment; success depends on steadfast sincerity.
The Story Behind the Lot (alternate version)Another traditional version, for reference
Chang He Recommends Ma Zhou
Ma Zhou was a poor scholar, overlooked despite his talent and relegated to the lower ranks. For a time, he relied on the hospitality of Chang He, a commander of the palace guard. When Emperor Taizong of Tang ordered his officials to submit memorials on affairs of state, Chang He, a military man with little command of writing, asked Ma Zhou to draft one for him. Ma Zhou composed more than twenty points that incisively addressed the problems of the day. Taizong was astonished when he read them. On learning that Ma Zhou had written them, he summoned him at once, took an instant liking to him, and promoted him beyond his station. Ma Zhou eventually rose to chancellor and became a distinguished minister of his age. A fine jade stone, though hidden within rough rock, shines brilliantly once cut open. This story in the lot suggests that a benefactor’s recommendation will reveal your talent. Though you may be low in status and overlooked for now, genuine ability will not remain hidden forever. Once someone who can recognize talent finds you, you can rise to prominence. Wait patiently for a good opportunity and keep honing your skills; the day when a benefactor lends a hand is near.
