The Story Behind the Lot
Li Yuan takes the throne
Li Yuan, posthumously known as Emperor Gaozu of Tang, came from an aristocratic family in the Guanzhong region. In his early years, he served the Sui dynasty as governor of Taiyuan. As disorder spread and warlords rose at the end of the Sui, Li Yuan had grand ambitions but bided his time and did not act rashly. Only when the moment was ripe did he launch an uprising at Jinyang and march west to capture Chang’an. After several more years of campaigning, he defeated his rivals, replaced the Sui as emperor, and founded the dynasty that would lay the foundations for three centuries of Tang rule. The oracle draws on the image of Li Yuan’s ambitions still unrealized in his early years, like a young moon that is not yet full. It suggests that your fortunes are incomplete and your strength not yet fully developed, so do not rush to force success. Wait until the time is ripe and build your strength; then, as with Li Yuan, events can fall into place and you can bring the larger situation under control. Be patient: hold your ground until the time comes, then act, and success will eventually be yours.
The Story Behind the Lot (alternate version)Another traditional version, for reference
Ma Zhou Seeks Lodging at an Inn
Ma Zhou was an eminent official in the early Tang dynasty. In his youth, he was poor, adrift, and unruly, and his hometown did not think highly of him. Traveling west toward Chang’an, he stopped at an inn in Xinfeng. The innkeeper focused on serving merchants and neglected him, so Ma Zhou ordered wine and drank alone, entirely at ease. Seeing his unusual bearing, the innkeeper was privately amazed. After reaching Chang’an, Ma Zhou lodged with Chang He, a Commandant of the Household Cavalry. When Emperor Taizong asked his officials to submit memorials on affairs of state, Chang He, a military man with little literary skill, had Ma Zhou draft more than twenty proposals in his name, each directly addressing the problems of the day. Taizong was greatly impressed. On learning that Ma Zhou had written them, he summoned him at once, took an immediate liking to him, and promoted him beyond the usual ranks. Ma Zhou rose rapidly and eventually became a chancellor. Drawing on Ma Zhou’s early obscurity and later recognition, the oracle suggests that even if your talents are overlooked for a time, patience until the opportunity is ripe will bring someone of influence who recognizes you—and your chance to shine.
