Tai Sui 2027 and the Chinese Zodiac Forecast for All 12 Signs: the Ding-Wei Year of the Goat

In the Chinese calendar, 2027 is the Ding-Wei (丁未) year, the Year of the Goat (also called the Sheep). Every new year the question people ask most is “who offends Tai Sui this year?” — fan tai sui (犯太歲), often translated as “clashing with the Grand Duke”. Working from the relations between earthly branches, the signs that share the year’s branch, clash with it, punish it, harm it or break with it in 2027 are four: the Goat, Ox, Dog and Rat. This page first sets out which relation applies to each of the four and where the schools differ, then shows how the 12 annual stars fall across the zodiac. Each sign’s own page gives the birth years, the nominal age in 2027 and the traditional reading of the year. All of this is a group-level reminder worked out from the year of birth; to see your own 2027, you need to go back to your personal chart.

Zodiac Signs That Offend Tai Sui in 2027

Tai Sui (太歲) is the deity presiding over the year, and folk tradition takes the year’s earthly branch as the place where Tai Sui sits. The earthly branch of 2027 is Wei (未). Anyone whose birth-year branch is the same as Wei, or clashes, punishes, harms or breaks with it, is traditionally said to offend Tai Sui (fan tai sui).

Zhi Tai Sui (值太歲): same branchGoatThe birth-year branch is also Wei, so this is the Goat’s own zodiac year (ben ming nian). An old saying has it that “Tai Sui sits right overhead”: a year of more change and pressure than usual, best met by keeping steady.
Chong Tai Sui (沖太歲): clashOxChou (丑) and Wei sit directly opposite each other on the circle of branches, a pairing called the Chou–Wei clash. Tradition often treats it as the heaviest form of offending Tai Sui, and in Taiwan it is commonly called zheng chong, the “direct clash”.
Xing Tai Sui (刑太歲): punishmentDog, Ox (schools differ)Chou, Wei and Xu (戌) together make up a three-way punishment: Xu punishes Wei, and Wei punishes Chou. The most widely circulated readings for 2027 list both the Dog and the Ox, while quite a few schools count only the Dog.
Hai Tai Sui (害太歲): harmRatZi (子) is Chou’s Six Harmonies partner, and Wei clashes with Chou, which breaks up Zi’s pairing; hence the Zi–Wei harm. Tradition mostly reads it as hidden obstruction in dealings with other people.
Po Tai Sui (破太歲): breakDogXu and Wei form one of the six “break” pairs. Tradition mostly reads it as plans being disrupted or a partnership changing course midway, and it is generally seen as one of the lighter of the five relations.

Schools classify the punishment relation differently: the most widely circulated 2027 readings list both the Dog (Xu punishes Wei) and the Ox (Wei punishes Chou), while quite a few count only the Dog. Some articles list each of the five relations — zhi, chong, xing, hai and po — as a separate entry and so speak of “five signs”, but the signs involved are still these four. In Taiwan, zheng chong (正沖, direct clash) generally refers to the clash, and pian chong (偏沖, indirect clash) mostly to punishment, harm and break.

How the 12 Annual Stars Fall in 2027

The twelve annual stars (流年十二星) are counted from the branch where Tai Sui sits and run in branch order: Tai Sui, Tai Yang, Sang Men, Tai Yin, Wu Gui, Si Fu, Sui Po, Long De, Bai Hu, Fu De, Tian Gou and Bing Fu. Each sign takes one of them each year. Traditionally Tai Yang, Tai Yin, Long De and Fu De are the auspicious stars, and the other eight are treated as inauspicious stars that call for care. This set of stars is laid out from the birth-year branch alone, which is not the same thing as a Ziwei Doushu chart cast from the year, month, day and hour of birth, so it can only serve as a rough reminder for the year.

Tai Sui (太歲, Grand Duke)GoatInauspiciousPresiding over the year, right overhead; traditionally linked with change and pressure, so steadiness serves better than haste.
Tai Yang (太陽, Sun)MonkeyAuspiciousTraditionally linked with helpful people and brightness; your work is more easily seen and recognised.
Sang Men (喪門, Mourning Door)RoosterInauspiciousOld readings link it with mourning clothes, visiting the sick and funerals; a reminder to look after elderly relatives and spend less time at funerals and sickbeds.
Tai Yin (太陰, Moon)DogAuspiciousTraditionally linked with help from women and harmony at home; when something comes up, the people around you are more likely to step in.
Wu Gui (五鬼, Five Ghosts) / Guan Fu (官符, Lawsuit Talisman)PigInauspiciousTraditionally linked with gossip, disputes over paperwork and lawsuits; worth taking contracts and written records seriously.
Si Fu (死符, Death Talisman) / Xiao Hao (小耗, Minor Loss)RatInauspiciousTraditionally linked with minor ailments, small expenses and lost items, mostly losses that come in bits and pieces.
Sui Po (歲破, Year Breaker) / Da Hao (大耗, Major Loss)OxInauspiciousThe position directly opposite Tai Sui; traditionally linked with large expenses and upheaval.
Long De (龍德, Dragon Virtue)TigerAuspiciousTraditionally linked with turning bad luck to good; when things get hard, help is easier to find.
Bai Hu (白虎, White Tiger)RabbitInauspiciousTraditionally linked with bloodshed and accidental injury; a reminder to take extra care when travelling, exercising or using tools.
Fu De (福德, Fortune Virtue)DragonAuspiciousTraditionally linked with blessings and celebrations; a more relaxed frame of mind and smoother going.
Tian Gou (天狗, Heavenly Dog) / Diao Ke (吊客, Mourning Guest)SnakeInauspiciousTraditionally linked with accidents and sorrowful events; a reminder to travel safely and look after elderly relatives.
Bing Fu (病符, Sickness Talisman)HorseInauspiciousIt falls where Tai Sui sat the year before; traditionally linked with minor illness and low energy, so rest and regular hours pay off.

2027 Forecast for the 12 Chinese Zodiac Signs

What Kind of Year Is 2027, the Ding-Wei Year?

The stem-branch pair for 2027 is Ding-Wei (丁未). The heavenly stem Ding belongs to fire, the earthly branch Wei belongs to earth, and the zodiac animal is the Goat, which is why the year is often called the Year of the Fire Goat. In the nayin (納音) system of the sixty stem-branch pairs, Bing-Wu and Ding-Wei both belong to “Heavenly River Water”, which is where the folk saying comes from that people born in 2027 have a Heavenly River Water destiny. In the Minguo calendar used in Taiwan, 2027 is Minguo year 116, the 116th year of the Republic of China. Counted by the solar terms, the Ding-Wei year begins at Lichun (立春, Beginning of Spring) on 4 February 2027; counted by the lunar calendar, it begins on the 1st day of the 1st lunar month, 6 February 2027, 2 days later.

What Is Tai Sui, and What Does It Mean to Offend Tai Sui?

Ancient observers noted that Jupiter, the “year star”, takes about twelve years to circle the sky, and imagined a counterpart, Tai Sui, moving in the opposite direction to keep count of the years; the direction in which Tai Sui stands each year is the direction of that year’s earthly branch. Tai Sui later came to be worshipped as the deity presiding over the year, with a different Tai Sui general (太歲星君) on duty in each of the sixty years of the cycle. Folk belief holds that people whose birth-year branch is the same as the year’s Tai Sui, or clashes, punishes, harms or breaks with it, are more likely to meet change and obstacles that year; this is called fan tai sui, offending Tai Sui. The Chinese saying about “breaking ground on Tai Sui’s head” expresses the same awe of Tai Sui’s direction. These are long-standing folk beliefs, and what people say and do about them varies from place to place.

Where the Schools Differ: Punishment, Direct vs Indirect Clash, and the Dragon

Lists of who offends Tai Sui in 2027 differ in three places. The first is punishment: within the Chou–Wei–Xu three-way punishment, Xu punishes Wei and Wei punishes Chou. The most widely circulated readings count both the Dog and the Ox as punishing Tai Sui, while quite a few count only the Dog. The second is counting: some articles list each of the five relations — zhi, chong, xing, hai and po — as a separate entry and so write “five signs”, though the signs themselves are still the Goat, Ox, Dog and Rat. The third is Taiwan’s zheng chong (direct clash) and pian chong (indirect clash). The common usage treats the clash as zheng chong and punishment, harm and break as pian chong; another method counts as pian chong the two signs three places before and after Tai Sui on the circle of branches, which in 2027 brings up the Dragon and the Dog. The mainstream five relations do not include the Dragon. Claims online that the Dragon “breaks” Tai Sui do not match the traditional six break pairs either: the branch that breaks with Wei is Xu, not Chen (辰).

In Harmony with Tai Sui: Rabbit and Pig (Three Harmonies), Horse (Six Harmonies)

Signs in harmony with Tai Sui are traditionally seen as having Tai Sui’s support. Hai (亥), Mao (卯) and Wei form the Three Harmonies wood frame (三合 san he), so in 2027 the Pig and the Rabbit are in three-way harmony with Tai Sui; Wu (午) and Wei form one of the Six Harmonies (六合 liu he), so the Horse forms a Six Harmonies pair with Tai Sui, also called sui he, “harmony with the year”. But harmony and the 12 annual stars are separate matters: the Rabbit meets Bai Hu, the Pig meets Wu Gui and the Horse meets Bing Fu, each with something to watch, and the good sign and the reminder do not cancel each other out. The popular practice of wearing Three Harmonies or Six Harmonies zodiac charms to “resolve” Tai Sui is mostly promoted by accessory and crystal sellers, and is best understood as commercialised folk custom.

When Does the Zodiac Year Change: Lichun or Lunar New Year?

There are two common ways to count when the zodiac sign changes. Bazi charts and the handover of Tai Sui mostly use Lichun as the boundary: in 2027 Lichun falls at 9:46 a.m. on 4 February (Beijing time; Taiwan and Hong Kong are in the same time zone). In Ziwei Doushu practice, some change the year at Lichun and some on the 1st day of the 1st lunar month. Everyday life and folk custom mostly use Lunar New Year as the boundary, and mainland China’s national standard on compiling and issuing the Chinese calendar also starts the lunar year on the 1st day of the 1st month: Lunar New Year 2027 falls on 6 February, 2 days after Lichun. So people born from 9:46 a.m. on 4 February 2027 through 5 February are Goats by the metaphysical count but Horses by folk custom, while those born from Lunar New Year on 26 January 2028 until Lichun on 4 February 2028 are Monkeys by folk custom but still Goats by the metaphysical count. Anyone born in January or February, in any year, should check against their own date of birth.

An Tai Sui and Bai Tai Sui: Folk Practices Around the Region

People who offend Tai Sui have several customary options. In Taiwan, many go to a temple between Lunar New Year and the Lantern Festival (20 February 2027, 2 weeks after Lunar New Year) for an tai sui (安太歲), “settling Tai Sui”: they register their name, lunar birthday and address, the temple lights a Tai Sui lamp or enshrines a Tai Sui tablet for them, and at the end of the lunar year they return for xie tai sui (謝太歲), “thanking Tai Sui”. Some temples also hand out Tai Sui talismans or tablets of the year’s Tai Sui general for worshippers to enshrine at home. In Hong Kong, people mostly go to a temple after Lichun for bai tai sui (拜太歲), “paying respects to Tai Sui”, and before the year is out for huan tai sui (還太歲), “repaying Tai Sui”; at Jingzhe (驚蟄, Awakening of Insects), on 6 March 2027 — the 3rd solar term of the year — there is also a custom of making offerings to the White Tiger. In many parts of mainland China there is a tradition of wearing red in one’s own zodiac year. Some people also stay at home for an hour or two at the moment Lichun begins, a custom called duo chun (躲春), “hiding from spring”. These practices carry on the wish for a good new year and for peace of mind; this site only describes them and does not judge whether they work. Whether to take part is a matter of personal belief.

Zodiac Horoscopes Only Look at the Birth Year

The Chinese zodiac sorts people into twelve groups by birth year, and everyone with the same sign reads the same text. In Bazi, though, the zodiac animal is only the earthly branch of the year pillar, one of eight characters; Ziwei Doushu needs the year, month, day and hour of birth to lay out the twelve palaces. Two Ox people born in 1973 and 1985 have different heavenly stems, and people born in the same year still differ in month, day and hour. So zodiac horoscopes work as a rough reminder for the year; to bring it down to the individual, you still need to look at your own chart.

FAQ

Which zodiac signs offend Tai Sui in 2027?

The mainstream answer is four: the Goat shares Tai Sui’s branch (zhi tai sui, its own zodiac year), the Ox clashes with Tai Sui, the Dog both punishes and breaks with Tai Sui, and the Rat harms Tai Sui. The most widely circulated readings also count the Ox as punishing Tai Sui, so the Ox is often described as “clash plus punishment”; quite a few schools, however, assign punishment to the Dog alone.

Does the Dragon offend Tai Sui in 2027?

By the mainstream five relations — zhi, chong, xing, hai and po — the Dragon does not offend Tai Sui, and its annual star is the auspicious Fu De. The question comes up for two reasons: one Taiwanese method counts the signs three places before and after Tai Sui as pian chong (indirect clash), which brings in the Dragon; and some articles wrongly list the Dragon as breaking with Tai Sui, whereas in the traditional six break pairs the branch that breaks with Wei is Xu (the Dog).

When does the 2027 Year of the Goat begin? If I was born between 1 January and the end of February, which of the 2 start dates decides my sign?

By the metaphysical count it begins at Lichun, 9:46 a.m. on 4 February 2027; by folk custom it begins at Lunar New Year on 6 February, 2 days later. If your birthday falls before both dates, you belong to the previous year’s sign; if it falls between them, the two methods give different signs, and Bazi follows Lichun.

Does offending Tai Sui always mean a bad year? Should I settle Tai Sui (an tai sui)?

Not necessarily. Offending Tai Sui is a traditional reminder given to a whole group of people by the branch of their birth year, and people with the same sign lead very different lives. An tai sui and bai tai sui are folk practices; in Taiwan people usually register at a temple before the Lantern Festival (20 February 2027, 2 weeks after Lunar New Year). Whether to do it is a matter of personal belief; the more practical step is to prepare well and double-check things throughout the year.

Which direction is Tai Sui in during 2027?

Tai Sui is at Wei, roughly south-southwest; Sui Po, the Year Breaker opposite it, is at Chou, roughly north-northeast. Traditional feng shui advises against major building work in the Tai Sui and Year Breaker directions this year, known as not “breaking ground on Tai Sui’s head”. This is a traditional feng shui view; for renovation and construction, safety and building regulations come first.

Is 2027 a “year without spring”?

Yes. The Ding-Wei lunar year runs from the 1st day of the 1st lunar month, 6 February 2027, to 25 January 2028, and contains no Lichun: the previous Lichun falls 2 days before it starts, on 4 February 2027, and the next one comes after it ends, on 4 February 2028. Folk tradition calls such a year a wu chun nian (無春年), a “year without spring”, and also a “widow’s year”. Astronomers point out that this is simply how the lunar calendar and the solar terms happen to line up, that it recurs every few years, and that it has nothing to do with whether marriages will go well.

What is the “Red Goat calamity” of Bing-Wu and Ding-Wei years?

The “Red Goat calamity” (紅羊劫) comes from an old saying. Chai Wang (柴望) of the Southern Song dynasty wrote the Bing Ding Gui Jian (丙丁龜鑑), which lists upheavals that happened in past Bing-Wu and Ding-Wei years; because Bing and Ding belong to fire, Wu is the Horse and Wei is the Goat, later writers called them the years of the “Red Horse and Red Goat”. This is a selective summary of historical events, not a prophecy. Every stem-branch year has its major events, and the saying should not be taken as a forecast of disaster for 2027.

How is a zodiac horoscope different from a personal Annual Destiny Book?

A zodiac horoscope looks only at the birth year and sorts everyone into twelve groups. The Annual Destiny Book casts a Ziwei Doushu chart from your year, month, day and hour of birth and looks at which of your own palaces the 2027 annual chart and your current decade cycle fall in. Two people with the same sign can get completely different Annual Destiny Books.
