The Story Behind the Lot
Han Yu caught in snow
Han Yu was a leading literary figure of the Tang dynasty and the foremost of the Eight Great Prose Masters of the Tang and Song. Known for his upright character and frank speech, he incurred Emperor Xianzong’s wrath by submitting a memorial opposing the emperor’s reception of a Buddhist relic into the palace. He narrowly escaped execution and, after Pei Du and others pleaded on his behalf, was demoted to prefect of Chaozhou. As he hurried south, he passed through Languan, where swirling snow stopped his horse in its tracks. His nephew-grandson Han Xiang arrived to see him off, and Han Yu, overcome with emotion, wrote the famous lines: “Clouds shroud the Qinling peaks—where is my home? Snow blocks the Languan Pass—my horse cannot go on.” His circumstances were bleak. Yet after reaching Chaozhou, Han Yu served diligently and cared for the people, preserving his reputation. Before long, he was recalled to court and returned to office; later in life, he rose to vice minister of the Ministry of Personnel. This lot takes its meaning from his hardship in the snow and his eventual return to prominence. It suggests that although you may suffer a demotion or setback and face difficult circumstances for a time, past affairs can still be put right: what was lost can be regained, adversity can turn to good fortune, and you can be called back into service.

Su Qin attains success
Su Qin was a statesman and persuader of the Warring States period. In his youth, he studied under Guiguzi, but after completing his studies he met with failure everywhere as he tried to persuade the various states, and returned home destitute. His family saw him as a failure: his wife did not leave her loom to welcome him, his sister-in-law would not cook for him, and even his parents refused to speak with him. Deeply shaken, Su Qin threw himself into study, “suspending a book from the beam and stabbing his thigh with an awl” to stay awake as he studied military strategy and political intrigue. Years later, he returned to public life and persuaded Yan, Zhao, Han, Wei, Qi, and Chu to unite against Qin under an alliance strategy. He won over the rulers of all six states and wore the seals of their chancellors, gaining immense power and honor. When he returned home in splendid robes, the family members who had once slighted him bowed low and dared not look up. This lot takes its meaning from his early poverty and his eventual rise to fulfill his great ambition. It suggests that opportunities and wealth lost in the past can gather again. With support from a benefactor and determined effort, your fortunes later in life will bring high office and distinction.
