The Story Behind the Lot
Thrice battling Lü Bu
This story comes from the Battle of Hulao Pass in Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Lü Bu, a general under Dong Zhuo, was famed as the greatest warrior under heaven. He rode the Red Hare and wielded a Sky-Piercing Halberd, and none among the allied lords could defeat him; he had already beaten several generals in succession. At this critical moment, the three brothers Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei stepped forward. Zhang Fei fought him first, and after dozens of rounds they were still evenly matched. Guan Yu joined the attack with his Green Dragon Crescent Blade. Liu Bei then entered the fray with his twin swords. Only by working together could the three heroes drive back the realm’s foremost warrior. The story shows both Lü Bu’s formidable skill and intimidating force, and how unity and cooperation can overcome a powerful foe. In this lot, it suggests that a formidable opponent or difficult dispute may currently seem overwhelming, but if you face the challenge without fear and draw on the strength of others and the aid of benefactors, a way forward will open and you will overcome the obstacle.
The Story Behind the Lot (alternate version)Another traditional version, for reference
Zong Que Rides the Wind and Breaks the Waves
Zong Que was a renowned general of the Liu Song dynasty during the Southern Dynasties. When he was young, his uncle Zong Bing asked about his ambitions. He answered with conviction, “I wish to ride the long winds and break ten thousand miles of waves.” The words revealed the bold spirit within him. He trained in martial arts from childhood and later joined the military. He campaigned south against Linyi and repeatedly distinguished himself in battle, eventually rising through military service to become General of the Left Guard. His career fulfilled the ambition he had expressed as a boy. The phrase “ride the wind and break the waves” thus became an enduring expression of tireless endeavor and lofty ambition. In this lot, the story is an excellent omen: it means you hold great ambitions and your future is like a boat propelled by a strong wind, breaking through waves for thousands of miles. Even temporary storms cannot block your way. Set aside your worries and press ahead bravely. Your talent will eventually be recognized and recommended, and you will rise swiftly as matters fall into place.
