The Story Behind the Lot
Zhao Zilong rescues Adou
Zhao Zilong, also known as Zhao Yun, was a renowned general of the Three Kingdoms period. During the Battle of Changban, Cao Cao’s forces overwhelmed Liu Bei’s, and Liu Bei was routed, leaving his family scattered. Fighting alone, Zhao Yun charged seven times into and out of the enemy ranks, clutching the young A Dou and breaking through the encirclement in a bloody fight. He eventually returned the young lord safely. His martial skill had seemed like a precious sword hidden beneath dust; only in a crisis did its edge shine. With Liu Bei’s trust and support, Zhao Yun’s reputation for loyalty and bravery spread far and wide. This story in the lot signifies that talent may go unrecognized for a time, but will emerge when hardship and a benefactor arrive. The lot’s message: Though your abilities have not yet had a chance to shine, when the time comes and a benefactor lends a hand, you can accomplish great things and make your name known.
The Story Behind the Lot (alternate version)Another traditional version, for reference
Baili Xi Tends Cattle and Becomes Chancellor
Baili Xi lived in poverty in his early years and was once reduced to slavery, earning his living by tending cattle and horses. His talent went unnoticed among ordinary people, and no one recognized it. Later, someone recommended him, and Duke Mu of Qin ransomed him for five black sheepskins, appointed him Senior Grand Master, and entrusted him with state affairs. He became known as the “Grand Master of Five Ramskins” and ultimately helped Qin achieve hegemony. Paired with Zhao Yun’s story in this lot, this tale signifies that a worthy person may sink into lowly circumstances and humble service for a time, but can soar once a wise ruler or benefactor recommends them. The lot’s message to the seeker: Though your present circumstances are difficult, your talents will eventually find a use. Wait patiently for someone who recognizes your worth.
