The Story Behind the Lot
Wu Yun crosses Zhaoguan Pass
Wu Yuan, also known as Wu Zixu, was the son of Wu She, a high official of the state of Chu during the Spring and Autumn period. King Ping of Chu listened to the slander of the courtier Fei Wuji and killed Wu She and his eldest son, Wu Shang, intending to eliminate the entire family. Wu Zixu escaped alone, determined to flee to Wu and borrow its troops to avenge them. On the way, he had to pass through Zhaoguan, the heavily guarded border crossing between Chu and Wu. A portrait of him was posted at the gate, and soldiers were searching for him. Every step filled Wu Zixu with dread; he was like someone carrying a tiger across a mountain, with his life at risk if he made the slightest mistake. According to legend, grief and anxiety turned his hair white overnight. The dramatic change in his appearance helped him slip through undetected. The oracle uses this story to describe someone currently in danger and filled with fear, surrounded by threats. Yet even in adversity, a turn of fortune may be hidden. It counsels you not to lose your composure in hardship, but to wait calmly for help to arrive.
The Story Behind the Lot (alternate version)Another traditional version, for reference
Wu Zixu Is Ferried Across
After enduring great hardship and passing through Zhaoguan, Wu Zixu reached the bank of a great river. Raging water blocked his way ahead, while pursuers were closing in behind him. Just as he was at a loss, a fisherman appeared. Taking pity on his desperate plight, the fisherman asked no questions and rowed him across the river, saving him from danger. Wu Zixu was deeply grateful and tried to give the fisherman the sword at his side, but the fisherman refused. To put Wu Zixu’s mind at ease, he then capsized his boat and drowned himself, showing that he would never reveal Wu Zixu’s whereabouts. Wu Zixu escaped to Wu and later helped King Helü of Wu lead an army against Chu, finally avenging his father and brother. The oracle uses the fisherman’s selfless ferrying to describe someone in a desperate and frightening situation who will find a benefactor willing to step forward and turn danger aside. Though rated moderately low, the fortune conveys rescue amid adversity and eventual safety. In a crisis, keep hope and do not stray from what is right.
