Guanyin Oracle Lot 54: A dream of empty glory
The Verse
You find treasure in a dream, then wake to none; the tryst at Mount Wu was only an illusion.
For marriage, illness, or lawsuits, seek another way to a better outcome.

The Story Behind the Lot
A dream of empty glory
A Dream of Millet comes from the Tang tale *The World Inside a Pillow*. A scholar named Lu Sheng met the Daoist Lü Weng at an inn in Handan and lamented his poverty and lack of success. Lü Weng lent him a pillow. Lu Sheng leaned on it and fell asleep. In his dream, he married into a prominent family, passed the imperial examination, rose to become chancellor, and enjoyed decades of wealth, honor, and a large family. When he awoke, the innkeeper’s pot of millet was not yet cooked. The decades of prosperity and disgrace had been no more than a dream during the time it took to cook a pot of rice. The tale is a metaphor for the fleeting and illusory nature of fame and fortune, which can vanish in an instant. This lot warns that what the seeker hopes to achieve may prove to be a spring dream: it seems about to come true, but slips away. Marriage, illness, legal disputes, and other matters are all unlikely to go smoothly. It is a most inauspicious sign, advising clear-eyed restraint and caution against wishful thinking.
The Story Behind the Lot (alternate version)Another traditional version, for reference
Ma Chao Pursues Cao Cao
During the Three Kingdoms period, Cao Cao had Ma Chao’s father, Ma Teng, killed. Ma Chao raised an army to avenge him and launched a fierce assault, routing Cao Cao. Cao Cao fled in panic. To avoid being recognized, he hurriedly removed his brocade robe, cut short his long beard, and rode off alone in a desperate escape. Just as Ma Chao was about to capture him, Cao Cao’s general Cao Hong fought to the death to save him, allowing Cao Cao to escape with his life. After a bloody battle, Ma Chao came close to victory but ultimately failed to kill his enemy. This lot is a most inauspicious sign: what you seek is like finding treasure in a dream, only to wake with empty hands; the promised romance is no more than an illusion. Even when prospects look bright, matters often fail at the final step. For questions about marriage, illness, or litigation, do not stubbornly pursue the same course. Seek another way forward and change direction early to avoid futile struggle and setbacks.
