The Story Behind the Lot
Monkey attains enlightenment
The Pilgrim is Sun Wukong, the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, from Journey to the West. He was a stone monkey born of a spirit stone on the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit. After causing havoc in Heaven, he was pinned beneath Five Elements Mountain by the Buddha for five hundred years. Later, Guanyin guided him to become a disciple of Tang Sanzang, receiving the religious name the Pilgrim and protecting his master on the journey west to obtain Buddhist scriptures. Along the way he subdued demons and monsters and endured eighty-one trials. The dangers of the Flaming Mountains, the White Bone Demon, and Lion Camel Ridge were all overcome through perseverance and wisdom. After the scriptures were brought back, Sun Wukong attained enlightenment and was named the Victorious Fighting Buddha by the Buddha. He shed his monkey form and realized the Great Way. This story means that those who endure trials and persevere will ultimately attain their goal, and hardship will give way to good fortune. As a lot, it says that although many tests lie ahead, steadfast resolve and courageous effort will clear the clouds and bring success to completion. It is a greatly auspicious omen.
The Story Behind the Lot (alternate version)Another traditional version, for reference
Liu Bang Becomes Emperor
Liu Bang was a low-ranking village patrol chief in Pei County at the end of the Qin dynasty. Though of humble origins, he had great ambitions and won people over through generosity. When the Qin dynasty lost its hold on power and rival claimants rose to contest it, Liu Bang joined the revolt against Qin, entered the passes first, and won popular support by proclaiming three simple laws. In the ensuing struggle between Chu and Han, he knew how to recognize and employ talent, relying on worthy advisers and generals such as Xiao He, Zhang Liang, and Han Xin. After four years of warfare, he finally defeated Xiang Yu, the Hegemon-King of Western Chu, at Gaixia, unified the realm, and took the throne, founding the Han dynasty, which endured for four hundred years. Liu Bang succeeded by aligning himself with the times, gathering talent, and treating people generously. This story means that those who follow the course of the times and seize their opportunity can achieve great things and usher in renewal. As a lot, it signals that fortune is turning and hardship will give way to prosperity. Affairs will proceed harmoniously, making this the right time to act with vigor and open a new chapter. Thus, like the Pilgrim’s attainment of the Way, it is a greatly auspicious sign.
