Guo Linggong Meets the Envoy Without His Helmet

The Tang rebel general Pugu Huai’en incited the Tibetans and Uyghurs to join forces with 300,000 troops and invade the Central Plains, advancing to Jingyang. The defending general Guo Ziyi had only a little over 10,000 soldiers, and the situation was dire. Pugu Huai’en then died of illness. With no one left to coordinate the allied forces, the two armies grew suspicious of each other and camped by the eastern and western gates. Guo Ziyi recalled having fought alongside the Uyghurs in suppressing the An Lushan Rebellion, and secretly sent someone to renew the old ties in the Uyghur camp. Their commander, Yao Ge-luo, valued the old friendship but said he would not believe the message unless Duke Guo came in person. Guo Ziyi said he had long put life and death aside in service of the state. Without armor or an escort, he entered the camp with only a few attendants. Seeing that the visitor truly was the old Duke Guo, Yao Ge-luo was delighted and held a banquet. After hearing Guo explain that the Tibetans were using the Uyghurs to advance their own interests, Yao Ge-luo immediately swore an alliance and agreed to change sides. When the Tibetans learned of the turn, they broke camp overnight. Tang and Uyghur forces joined to pursue and decisively defeat 100,000 of them, bringing years of peace to the frontier.
