The Story Behind the Lot
Fair wind to Tengwang Pavilion
Wang Bo, a gifted poet of the Tang dynasty, was traveling to Jiaozhi to visit his father when he passed through Hongzhou (present-day Nanchang). At the time, Governor Yan Boyu was hosting a grand banquet at Wang Teng Pavilion. He intended for his son-in-law to present a prewritten preface before the guests and win renown for his literary talent. According to legend, Wang Bo spent the night aboard a boat, where a divine being came to his aid: a favorable wind carried the boat three hundred li overnight, bringing him just in time for the gathering. At the banquet, everyone deferred to one another, but Wang Bo made no false show of modesty. He took up his brush and wrote the Preface to Wang Teng Pavilion on the spot. The line “The rosy clouds and a lone wild duck fly together; the autumn waters and boundless sky share one hue” astonished everyone present. Governor Yan also marveled at his extraordinary talent, and Wang Bo’s fame soon spread throughout the land. This oracle draws on the words “carried by the wind” to suggest that someone may be unprepared, yet favored by fortune and borne along by a timely breeze to an unexpected opportunity and sudden fame. Like a merchant ship returning laden with a fair wind, autumn endeavors receive the help of favorable timing and achieve more with less effort. The message is to go with the current and seize the opportunity; the reward will follow.
