Guanyin Oracle Lot 86: Shang Lu tops three exams
The Verse
Spring comes, and blossoms brighten the sunlit terrace;
Ships sail from distant shores, their holds brimming with treasure.
You leap through Yu’s Gate and its three mighty waves—
Like thunder suddenly resounding over level ground.

The Story Behind the Lot
Shang Lu tops three exams
Shang Lu was a distinguished Ming official from Chun’an, Zhejiang, with exceptional talent and learning. He achieved a rare feat in the imperial examinations: first place in the provincial examination, first place in the metropolitan examination, and first place in the palace examination. He thus came first in all three, an honor seldom seen in the history of the Ming examinations. Shang Lu later served under the Yingzong, Daizong, and Xianzong emperors, eventually becoming Grand Secretary. Upright in office and skilled in assisting the court, he earned the respect of officials and common people alike. This lot draws on his triumph in all three examinations and signifies great good fortune: spring brings success in examinations and repeated achievements. Those seeking exam results, recognition, or promotion can expect one success after another and steady advancement. This is a time of favorable fortune and broad opportunity; strive to advance, and you will reap a rich harvest.

The Queen Mother of the West Presents a Chart
The Queen Mother of the West is a revered goddess in Chinese mythology who rules over the realm of immortals. She dwells at the Jade Pool on Mount Kunlun and is associated with the elixir of immortality and the peaches of immortality. Legend tells that she descended to the human world to present treasures and sacred charts, helping virtuous rulers govern—bestowing auspicious charts or peaches upon figures such as the Yellow Emperor, Yu the Great, and King Mu of Zhou. These gifts symbolize blessings from Heaven and the arrival of auspicious signs. This lot draws on the image of the Queen Mother presenting a chart: a treasure bestowed from above and a blessing from the immortals. It is like returning from a distant journey with a full cargo or leaping through the Dragon Gate: a thunderclap from a clear sky, and fame spreading in every direction. With the good fortune of spring, those seeking wealth, traveling far, or pursuing a plan will receive divine aid and Heaven’s protection. Expect extraordinary achievements and a great rise in reputation. This is a highly auspicious sign: seize the opportunity and ride the momentum.
