The Story Behind the Lot
Luo Tong is made marshal
In the historical romances of the Sui and Tang dynasties, Luo Tong is the son of Luo Cheng, Duke of Yue. Born into a distinguished and wealthy military family, he mastered the martial arts from childhood. After his father's early death, Luo Tong upheld the family tradition and entered military service while still young to serve his country. When foreign forces rose in rebellion and a great army threatened the frontier, none of the Tang commanders could withstand them. Luo Tong stepped forward, distinguished himself in a martial contest on the parade ground, and was appointed Grand Marshal for the Northern Campaign, commanding the entire army against the foreign enemy. He subdued the northern forces and won a resounding victory. His achievements and military renown spread throughout the realm, living up to his illustrious military lineage. Drawing on Luo Tong's youthful appointment and sudden rise to fame, this lot suggests that those seeking distinction may encounter some setbacks in their background or experience, but genuine ability, solid learning, and the confidence of a strong family tradition will ultimately bring high office and widespread renown. It is a supremely auspicious omen of great promise.
The Story Behind the Lot (alternate version)Another traditional version, for reference
Lord Xinling Saves Zhao
Lord Xinling, Wei Wuji, was one of the Four Lords of the Warring States and a son of King Zhao of Wei. Despite his royal birth, he treated scholars with humility and respect and maintained several thousand retainers, earning a reputation throughout the lands. When a great Qin army besieged Handan, the capital of Zhao, Zhao appealed to Wei for aid. Fearing Qin, the king of Wei dared not send troops and stood by as Zhao faced destruction. To save Zhao and preserve a neighboring state, Lord Xinling adopted Hou Ying's plan. He enlisted Ru Ji, the king's favored consort, to steal the military tally, then ordered the strongman Zhu Hai to kill General Jin Bi with a hammer when the general refused to surrender command. Having taken control of the army, he personally led the Wei forces to a decisive victory over Qin, lifted the siege of Handan, and saved Zhao. This deed made him famous among the feudal lords, and people everywhere admired his righteousness. Drawing on Lord Xinling's respect for worthy people and his righteous rescue of Zhao, this lot suggests that those who cultivate goodwill widely and win others over through virtue will find capable helpers in times of danger, ultimately achieving great deeds and an enduring reputation throughout the lands.
