Seven Killings Star (七殺 Qī Shā)

繁: 七殺星简: 七杀星Qī Shā Xīng· Ziwei Doushu (Purple Star Astrology)

Also known as: General Star · 將星 · 肅殺之星

The general star — sharp execution, independent action, transformation through challenge.

Seven Killings Star (七殺) is the chart's great warrior and transformer. It carries sharp, decisive, sometimes brutal energy: the willingness to cut through obstacles, take independent action, and remake oneself or one's circumstances completely.

Natives with Seven Killings in the Life Palace are typically strong-willed, independent, suited for entrepreneurial or military careers, and capable of dramatic comebacks after setbacks. The shadow side: excessive harshness, isolation, and a tendency to burn bridges.

Pairings: Purple Star·Seven Killings (紫微·七殺) — "transformed authority," capable of true command; Military Bend·Seven Killings (武曲·七殺) — sharp executive force; Honest Chastity·Seven Killings (廉貞·七殺) — principled but volatile drive.

Seven Killings comes by its name differently from its two partners. Greedy Wolf (貪狼 Tān Láng) and Army Breaker (破軍 Pò Jūn) are taken straight from the Daoist names for the Northern Dipper's seven stars, Greedy Wolf, Great Gate, Prosperity Star, Literary Excellence, Honest Chastity, Military Bend and Army Breaker, and Seven Killings is not among them. Doushu assigns it to the Southern Dipper with metal as its element, and the force of the name comes from the seasonal correlations set out in texts such as the Huainanzi's treatise on the heavens: metal answers to autumn, and autumn is when growth stops and what needs cutting is cut. Metal is the standard element, though many sources add a fiery component and the yin-yang assignment varies by edition.

The structural fact that matters most is that Army Breaker and Greedy Wolf always stand in Seven Killings' triangle. On any chart whatsoever the three form a triad. Seven Killings is therefore never a single-star question but a rhythm: Greedy Wolf generates the appetite, Seven Killings makes the cut, Army Breaker dismantles what is left. Whichever of the three occupies the Life Palace, the other two shine in from the triangle. That is why classical commentary on Seven Killings is inseparable from change — the change belongs to the triad, not to one star's temperament.

The opposite palace is always Heavenly Treasury (天府 Tiān Fǔ). The one who charges permanently faces the granary, and the configuration is itself the classical prescription: force without supply cannot be sustained, however hard it strikes. In practice the question to ask of Seven Killings is not how fierce it is but whether prosperity reaches it. With the Prosperity Star (祿存 Lù Cún) or a prosperity transformation in the triangle, tradition holds that the cutting energy finds an outlet and converts into execution and enterprise. With no prosperity and malefics crowding in, the old verdicts turn severe and counsel restraint.

Like Heavenly Aide (天相 Tiān Xiàng), Seven Killings never appears in the ten-stem transformation table, taking no prosperity, authority, reputation or obstruction. Its strength is decided entirely by company. The most discussed arrangement is Purple Star with Seven Killings, which occurs only in the si and hai palaces and is traditionally described as converting the killing force into authority: with the emperor present, sharpness becomes command, and classical verdicts on it run high. Military Bend with Seven Killings is metal upon metal, formidable execution with little room to manoeuvre. Honest Chastity with Seven Killings is opinionated and volatile. The pattern names need care, though: the two “facing the Dipper” patterns are defined inconsistently across editions, with the palaces assigned to each sometimes reversed outright, and the star's ordinal place within the Southern Dipper differs between printings as well.

The word “killing” is what gets misread. It points to the autumn culling, to pruning, stopping and deciding, and not to harm. A second misreading treats the triad as an inauspicious pattern; what it describes is a tempo of change, and the classical advice is that such charts do better in motion than settled, which is not the same thing as a hard life. A third equates Seven Killings in the Life Palace with a bad temper, when the old descriptions are about deciding quickly and drawing clean boundaries, which need not show on the surface at all. One caution belongs with all three: the old texts are uniformly harsh about Seven Killings sharing a seat with the fierce auxiliaries, but those verdicts were written for the conditions of Ming and Qing life, and read today they are better taken as symbolism than as a ruling on anyone's circumstances.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Seven Killings in the Life Palace mean?

Classically: strong will, quick decisions, clear boundaries and a dislike of depending on others — suited to positions where somebody has to carry things alone. The sources also describe a stretch of establishing oneself without much inherited support. Much rides on the triangle: with the Prosperity Star or a prosperity transformation in view, tradition reads the star's force as execution; with malefics and no prosperity, the verdicts turn cautionary.

Is Seven Killings an evil star? Does it predict accidents or death?

No. “Killing” here carries the sense of autumn's culling, from the old correlation of metal with autumn and autumn with cutting back — stopping, clearing, deciding. It does not mean harm or death. Traditional astrology is a symbolic system; it does not forecast matters of life and safety and should not be used that way. The harsh classical verdicts about the star read as warnings against excessive hardness, not as announcements of outcomes.

What is the Seven Killings, Army Breaker and Greedy Wolf triad?

It is the three stars taken together. On every Ziwei chart without exception they form a mutual triangle. Tradition uses the set to describe a tempo of change: Greedy Wolf supplies desire and expansion, Seven Killings supplies decision and severance, Army Breaker supplies demolition and rebuilding. Whichever one falls in the Life Palace, the other two shine in from the triangle, which is why classical readings of such charts stress movement over consolidation.

What does Purple Star with Seven Killings mean?

The two share a seat only in the si and hai palaces, an arrangement tradition calls turning the killing force into authority. Seven Killings alone is edge and severance; with the emperor star present that force is absorbed into command and office, and classical verdicts on the combination are favourable, often linked to holding real authority. It still depends on whether prosperity reaches the triangle and whether the assisting stars are present — an unsupported Purple Star remains a sovereign without ministers.

Can Seven Killings carry the obstruction transformation?

No. Seven Killings does not appear in the ten-stem transformation table at all, and neither does Heavenly Aide. The star has no route to turning against itself; everything it expresses comes from the major star sharing its seat, from Heavenly Treasury opposite, and from the prosperity and malefic stars reaching it across the triangle. A chart showing Seven Killings transformed is using a minority system, and it is fair to ask what that system rests on.
