Also known as: Star of Romance and Discipline · 次桃花
Honest Chastity Star (廉貞) is one of Ziwei Doushu's most complex stars, blending strict moral discipline with intense romantic and creative passion. The character is principled, observant, and prone to extremes — either deeply loyal or sharply rebellious.
Natives with this star in the Life Palace often exhibit dramatic emotional life, strong aesthetic sense, and capability for both careful planning and impulsive action. Healthy expression manifests as principled leadership; unhealthy expression as emotional drama or legal entanglement.
Honest Chastity is a "secondary romance star" (次桃花). Pairings: Honest Chastity·Heavenly Treasury (廉貞·天府) for stable principled wealth; Honest Chastity·Greedy Wolf (廉貞·貪狼) for charisma and risk-taking; Honest Chastity·Seven Killings (廉貞·七殺) for sharp executive force.
The name Lianzhen predates Ziwei Doushu. It comes from the Daoist titles for the seven stars of the Northern Dipper — Greedy Wolf, Great Gate Star, Prosperity Star, Literary Excellence, Lianzhen, Military Bend, Army Breaker — where it stands fifth and corresponds to the star Western astronomy calls Alioth. The astrology took the old label and layered its own symbolism onto it: a yin fire nature, the transformed quality of confinement (囚 qiú), and stewardship of the Career Palace. Understood that way, Honest Chastity is an inherited title, not a verdict on anyone's morals.
Working with Lianzhen on a real chart follows three questions. Which palace does it occupy? How strong is it in that branch, given that the star is at its brightest in 寅 and 申, a placement classical sources name the Heroic Star Facing the Origin (雄宿朝元 xióng sù cháo yuán) and read as capacity for responsibility? And what accompanies it? Weak placements sitting with Yang Blade (擎羊 Qíng Yáng), Tuoluo (陀羅 Tuó Luó), Fire Star (火星) or Bell Star (鈴星) push a reading toward friction and volatility. A birth-year stem of 甲 gives Lianzhen the wealth transformation, a stem of 丙 the obstruction, two readings at opposite poles. Because the conditions stack that way, treating a Lianzhen obstruction as a forecast of lawsuits or injury is unsafe. In classical usage an obstruction describes entanglement, a matter that will not resolve, a mind that will not let go, and how heavily to read it depends on the palace, on brightness, and on which stars are in view.
The whole point of the confinement attribute is being bound by something: rules, procedure, discipline, contracts, formal standing. That is why tradition makes Lianzhen the governor of career. Where it rules working life, the classical associations run to law, civil service, policing, auditing and design — fields that demand a rulebook and an eye at the same time. The identical energy with nowhere legitimate to go is read as severity toward oneself and others, or as a taste for breaking rules simply to feel unconstrained.
Lianzhen and Greedy Wolf (貪狼) are both classed as romance stars, but they divide the ground between them. Greedy Wolf is the primary one and speaks to breadth of desire and sociability; Lianzhen is secondary and speaks to intensity, narrowing rather than widening once attached. Sharing a palace with Heavenly Treasury (天府) in 辰 or 戌, the vault steadies Lianzhen's restlessness into something grounded but still aesthetic. Sharing one with Seven Killings (七殺) in 丑 or 未 puts discipline behind decisiveness, a pairing tradition treats kindly for accumulation — though added malefics are said to tip decisiveness into obstinacy.
With Lianzhen it pays to say which method is in use before arguing about who is right. The three-harmony approach starts from brightness and named patterns, reading the star through its palace and the three palaces supporting it. The four-transformation approach cares where Lianzhen's wealth and obstruction transformations travel, using them to trace cause and effect. Even the gloss on confinement splits: some commentators make it restriction imposed from outside, others self-imposed discipline. Both readings survive in the older commentaries, so the workable habit is to name the one being applied and then test it against the chart.
Tradition describes a principled, strongly feeling person who carries discipline and passion in the same temperament. In its bright placements, 寅 and 申, the emphasis falls on responsibility and initiative; in weak placements alongside malefic stars it shifts toward volatility and conflict. Ziwei Doushu never reads one star alone — the opposite palace and the supporting palaces are consulted before any conclusion is drawn.
Confinement (囚) is the transformed quality classical texts assign to it. The word points to a nature shaped by rules and constraints, not to imprisonment as a predicted event. In the Career Palace it is read as suiting structured, regulated work; in the palaces that govern relationships it is read as deep investment, high standards and reluctance to let go of an attachment.
No. An obstruction traditionally signals entanglement and preoccupation — something that will not settle. Its weight depends on which palace Lianzhen occupies, whether it is bright there, and whether Yang Blade, Tuoluo, Fire Star or Bell Star accompany it. Classical method stacks several conditions before reading anything severe; one transformation was never meant to carry that judgement alone.
Greedy Wolf is the primary romance star and describes wide-ranging desire, sociability and appetite for new experience. Lianzhen is the secondary one and describes concentration: fewer attachments, held far more intensely, with a streak of principle and possessiveness. When both appear in one chart, tradition contrasts them as breadth against depth rather than treating them as two versions of the same influence.
As the star tradition assigns to career, Lianzhen in the Career Palace is linked with fields combining rules and aesthetic judgement — law, auditing, administration, policing, design. This describes an inclination rather than predicting an occupation. The rest of the Career Palace, and the decade cycle currently in force, weigh at least as heavily as the single placement.
