Military Bend Star (武曲 Wǔ Qū)

繁: 武曲星简: 武曲星Wǔ Qū Xīng· Ziwei Doushu (Purple Star Astrology)

Also known as: Wealth Star · 財星

The wealth and decisiveness star — governing finance, action, hardness of will, and martial discipline.

Military Bend Star (武曲) is one of the chart's primary wealth stars and the archetype of decisive, no-nonsense action. It represents resoluteness, financial acumen, and a martial temperament willing to pursue tangible results regardless of obstacles.

A native with Military Bend in the Life Palace tends to be direct, hard-working, financially competent, and emotionally guarded. The downside: the personality can be overly hard, lonely in love, or insufficiently flexible in interpersonal dynamics.

Military Bend governs metal element (金) and pairs with Greedy Wolf (武曲·貪狼) for "earned wealth through action," with Seven Killings (武曲·七殺) for executive authority, and with Heavenly Mansion (武曲·天府) for stable financial growth.

The name comes from the Dipper. Its seven stars carry classical astronomical names — Tianshu, Tianxuan, Tianji, Tianquan, Yuheng, Kaiyang, Yaoguang — and a parallel Daoist set: Greedy Wolf, Great Gate, Prosperity Star, Literary Excellence, Honest Chastity, Military Bend, Army Breaker. Military Bend (武曲 Wǔ Qū) is the sixth. Ziwei Doushu imported the Daoist list whole and gave each name a character of its own, so the military in Military Bend is an inherited label rather than a claim about soldiering. Its element is Metal and its transformed quality is wealth.

The commonest mistake is to read this star as a quantity of money. What it describes is a manner of pursuing it: direct, oriented to tangible return, willing to trade skill and labour for result, poor at indirection. Placement decides the subject. In the Life Palace it speaks about temperament and conduct; in the Wealth Palace about where money comes from and how it moves through a life; in the Spouse Palace or another relationship palace, about hardness and distance inside that bond. Same star, entirely different question. Three further corrections follow from that. Military Bend in the Life Palace does not promise wealth, since judging a chart's financial pattern draws at minimum on the Wealth and Property Palaces, the placement of Prosperity Star and Hua Lu, and the direction of the decade periods. The military in the name implies no uniform and no manual trade: the hardness describes a style, and it reads the same in accounting, engineering, clinical work or sales, wherever precision and follow-through matter. A hard manner is also not an unkind one, though classical phrasing can make the two sound alike. Older texts apply the harsh vocabulary of solitude to Military Bend in a woman's chart; that wording belongs to its period, and most contemporary readers render the same traits as financial independence and a strong need for autonomy.

A wealth star dislikes isolation, so the working habit is to check its company first. Meeting Prosperity Star, or carrying Hua Lu, is read as an open and reasonably solid route to income. Meeting the Void and Robbery stars is read as money arriving and leaving, effort poorly converted. Meeting Qing Yang or Tuo Luo points to income won the hard way, with friction or injury attached. Military Bend in the four storehouse branches, Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei, is described as wealth entering the vault, favouring accumulation over display. One further fact belongs with that check: this is one of the few majors that takes all four transformations, Hua Ke under Jia, Hua Lu under Ji, Hua Quan under Geng and Hua Ji under Ren, which makes its fortunes swing noticeably between periods and makes it the star most affected when two lineages' transformation tables disagree.

Six configurations exhaust its possibilities: with Heavenly Treasury in Zi/Wu, Greedy Wolf in Chou/Wei, Heavenly Aide in Yin/Shen, Seven Killings in Mao/You, Army Breaker in Si/Hai, and alone in Chen/Xu. With Treasury it leans conservative and cumulative. With Greedy Wolf appetite and action rise together, and classical comment holds that this pairing tends to arrive late, after an uneven start. With Seven Killings the hardness peaks and suits execution; with Army Breaker, building follows demolition; with Heavenly Aide, force and procedure balance each other.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Military Bend in the Life Palace guarantee wealth?

No. Calling it a wealth star describes a relationship with money — direct pursuit, preference for tangible return, willingness to trade skill and effort for it, not an amount. Traditional judgement of finances draws on the Wealth Palace, the Property Palace and where Prosperity Star and Hua Lu fall, then follows the decade periods. Military Bend meeting the Void and Robbery stars is classically read as money passing straight through, which is the opposite of the popular assumption.

What kind of work suits Military Bend?

Tradition points toward work with precision, discipline and a measurable result — finance, technical and engineering trades, clinical work, sales, anything executed personally, and less toward roles built on prolonged soft negotiation. This is a statement about temperament, not an occupational forecast: the Career Palace and the surrounding configuration carry the actual judgement, and schooling and opportunity matter at least as much as any star does.

Is Military Bend unfavourable in a woman's chart?

Classical texts often use severe language here, framing the star as solitary, and that framing follows from the era's assumptions about women's roles rather than from anything in the star itself. The underlying traits of self-reliance, decisiveness, clear boundaries and comfort with managing money are usually rendered today as independence. Any judgement about marriage rests on the Spouse Palace, the Wellbeing Palace and the transformations, never on one star read in isolation.
