Zhen Wei Lei (震為雷 ䷲) — Thunder Doubled

繁: 震為雷简: 震为雷Zhèn Wéi Léi· I-Ching (The Book of Changes)

Also known as: 重震 · Hexagram 51 · ䷲

The 51st hexagram; Thunder over Thunder, symbolising sudden shock that startles into awareness and self-examination.

Zhen Wei Lei is the 51st hexagram, doubling the Thunder trigram (☳ over ☳). The judgement "震來虩虩,笑言啞啞。震驚百里,不喪匕鬯" describes a shock that first frightens, then gives way to composed laughter — one who remains steady through the tremor does not drop the sacred ladle.

The Great Image reads "洊雷,震;君子以恐懼修省" ("Repeated thunder; the noble person, in awe and fear, examines and corrects the self"). In divination Zhen signals a sudden jolt or upheaval that, met calmly, becomes a catalyst for renewal.
