Qian (乾 ☰) — The Creative

繁: 乾卦简: 乾卦Qián Guà· I-Ching (The Book of Changes)

Also known as: Heaven Trigram · ☰ · 天

The first of the eight trigrams; pure yang, representing heaven, creativity, and dynamic strength.

Qian (乾) consists of three solid yang lines (☰) and stands as the most yang of all eight trigrams. The Shuogua commentary identifies it with heaven, the father, the head, the horse, and the metal element — symbols of leadership, generative power, and unceasing motion.

In I-Ching divination, when Qian appears it suggests initiative, beginning new ventures, and the responsibility that comes with creative authority. Doubled, it forms the first hexagram (重乾) — "Heaven over Heaven," the archetype of creative force in motion.
