Also known as: Emperor Star · 帝座 · 北斗主
Purple Star (紫微) is the central pivot of the entire Ziwei Doushu system — its name "Zǐ Wēi" originally referred to the polar region of the night sky around Polaris, considered the seat of the celestial emperor in classical Chinese cosmology. As the leading star, it dictates the temperament of the chart owner: dignified, self-respecting, naturally inclined to leadership, and reluctant to submit to others.
When Purple Star sits in the Life Palace (命宮), the native typically displays composure, a strong sense of personal authority, and an instinct to take charge. However, without supporting auxiliary stars (such as Left Assistant 左輔 and Right Support 右弼), the position is "lonely sovereign without ministers" — capable but unsupported, prone to isolation or arrogance.
Purple Star pairs intimately with the Heavenly Treasury Star (天府): together they anchor the two great star groups (北斗 / 南斗) of the chart. The combinations Purple Star + Seven Killings (紫微·七殺), Purple Star + Greedy Wolf (紫微·貪狼), and Purple Star + Heavenly Treasury (紫微·天府) define some of the most studied chart patterns in classical literature.
