Mao (卯) — Rabbit Branch / Yin Wood

繁: 卯(兔)简: 卯(兔)Mǎo· Bazi (Four Pillars of Destiny)

Also known as: Rabbit Branch

Fourth Earthly Branch; yin wood; the rabbit sign; rules early morning (05:00–07:00) and the second month of spring (春分).

Mao is yin wood, hidden stem 乙 alone — pure soft growing wood. It is the rabbit at sunrise, the equinox month, the cardinal east. Mao symbolizes elegance, refined sensitivity, beauty, and the social grace that flowers when conditions are just right. Mao Day Masters often have artistic taste, gentleness, and an instinct for harmonious relationships.

Mao san-he with 亥 and 未 transforms to wood (亥卯未合化木), and six-unites with 戌 to fire (卯戌合火). It is conflicted by 酉 (卯酉冲), forms the 子卯相刑 (the "punishment of irreverence"), and breaks with 辰 (卯辰相害).
