Gen Wei Shan (艮為山 ䷳) — Mountain Doubled

繁: 艮為山简: 艮为山Gèn Wéi Shān· I-Ching (The Book of Changes)

Also known as: 重艮 · Hexagram 52 · ䷳

The 52nd hexagram; Mountain over Mountain, symbolising stillness, knowing when to stop, and staying within one's proper place.

Gen Wei Shan is the 52nd hexagram, doubling the Mountain trigram (☶ over ☶). Mountain signifies stopping and rest. The judgement "艮其背,不獲其身" — keeping the back still so that the restless self is not perceived — teaches the art of quieting thought at the right moment.

The Great Image reads "兼山,艮;君子以思不出其位" ("Mountains standing together; the noble person's thoughts do not stray beyond his position"). In divination Gen counsels pause, restraint, and staying grounded rather than forcing progress.
